My name is Austin and I’ve been a geek for as long as I can remember. I love technology, pop culture, comics and everything in between. I’ve been going to comic cons and Star Trek conventions since I was little, but I felt insulated from the rest of the world and didn’t know where the local geeks were. Cons were the times that I felt comfortable and had found my “people”. I was so fortunate to have parents that drove me to New York to visit Marvel Comic’s headquarters and take me to a comic con in NYC for our vacation. We didn’t know where else to go locally.
Fast forward through adolescence and I was fortunate to be surrounded by other geeks that helped me start Motor City Geek in early 2014 (Rob and Scott). I wanted to make sure kids and adults would have a place to know what’s going on around them. We have such a vibrant and amazing community of geeks, nerds, creators, artists, makers, and doers in the area that they all deserve to be known, and you deserve to have the chance to check out what’s going on in your area. This is my humble attempt to spotlight our community through my photography, our teams writing and reviews, and now our podcast.
Motor City Geek the Podcast covers all the geeky goodness in the Metro Detroit area and beyond. We cover comic cons, pop culture, and anything you could be geeked about. Our Podcast team is led by Austin Benedict, IT guy and photographer, Melissa Benedict, therapist and shopaholic (and TARDIS on the weekends), and Mallory Crowe, a romance writer with a love for all pop culture.
