After spending a year in an orphanage, she was adopted by a couple in Mumbai and brought to San Jose, California. In Mumbai, Meena would watch over a litter of puppies at her home. When she came to the United States, almost every weekend included a trip to the Humane Society or to Muttville Senior Dog Rescue. Muttville is a cage-free dog rescue that gives senior dogs a “second chance at life,” according to their website. The organization was founded by 2016 CNN Hero Sherri Franklin and rescues about 1,000 dogs per year and runs mostly with the help of volunteers. Meena first heard of the rescue from a neighbor whose dog had been adopted from Muttville. The neighbor shared stories of how senior dogs are often left behind in shelters. With tender love and care, those dogs can make great companions. “More people should adopt senior dogs,” says Meena. “They give you the same unconditional love as any other dog.” Meena understood what it felt like to be left behind, and wanted to help the senior dogs find the loving homes they deserve, just like she did. The problem was, Meena had to be 17-years-old to volunteer at Muttville, and she was only 12. She wanted to find a way to support Muttville and came up with an idea. She advertised on Nextdoor offering pet sitting and Pet Fairy Services was born. Meena began pet sitting in her own home for her neighbors and school friends with the goal of supporting Muttville. “You are never too young to start a business,” says Meena. With rates of $35 per day and several years of hard work, Meena has managed to raise $7,000 for Muttville. That number doubled to $14,000, thanks to a matching donation program with Intel, where her father works. The Intel Volunteer Matching Grant Program encourages employees to donate time, money or labor to nonprofits that give back to their communities, according to Intel’s website. Meena plans to continue working with Muttville and hopes that more people will adopt older mutts from shelters during this pandemic. “We need their love more than ever,” she says. TOPIC INTRODUCTION Top 10 Movies That Make Men Cry 10. Marley and Me What it’s about: John (Owen Wilson) and Jenny Grogan (Jennifer Aniston) raise a difficult puppy named Marley to adulthood along with their kids. When you’ll start crying: An aging Marley, suffering from arthritis and deafness, nearly dies but makes a recovery. When you’ll totally lose it: Marley reaches a point where surgery can no longer help him. He is euthanized with John at this side, and buried in front yard with the family gathered to pay their respects. 9. E.T. What it’s about: Lonely 10-year-old Elliott (Henry Thomas) befriends an alien named E.T. who’s stranded on Earth, eventually helping him get back to his home planet. When you’ll start crying: E.T. and Elliott both become ill. When they’re separated, Elliott recovers, but E.T. continues to get worse and appears close to death. When you’ll totally lose it: E.T. has to say good-bye to Elliott and his sister Gertie (Drew Barrymore). He touches his glowing finger to Elliott’s forehead and tells him, “I’ll be right here.” 8. Philadelphia When gay lawyer Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks) is fired, he believes it’s because of his sexual orientation. He hires another lawyer, Joe Miller (Denzel Washington), to sue his former firm. When you’ll start crying: Joe visits a dying Andrew in the hospital to tell him that the jury has ruled in his favor. Though once afraid to get near Andrew, Joe touches his face. When you’ll totally lose it: Andrew tells his boyfriend Miguel (Antonio Banderas) that he is ready to die, and he does shortly thereafter 7. Old Yeller What it’s about: In 1860s Texas, a boy named Travis (Tommy Kirk) forges a bond with his pet dog, a Labrador retriever he names Old Yeller. When you’ll start crying: Old Yeller is bitten by a wolf while defending his family. The dog survives the attack, but you know what’s coming. When you’ll totally lose it: After a rabid Old Yeller goes after Travis’ brother Arliss (Kevin Corcoran), Travis is forced to shoot and kill him. 6. Rain Man 5. Brians Song A 1971 TV movie that’s attained legendary status as a work that no man’s tear ducts can resist, Brian’s Song tells the alternately mournful and inspiring tale of football player Brian Piccolo (James Caan), who was ultimately felled by cancer. His relationship with friend Gale Sayers (Billy Dee Williams) is the stuff of archetypal male camaraderie, and Sayers’s speech about his friend is one of the movies’ all-time four-hankie moments. 4. One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest has a tragic ending, and makes me bleary eyed when I think too hard on it, but the tears strangely intensify upon the victorious final shot, to see something positive and good come from such bleakness and despair. 3. Dead Poets Society What it’s about: English teacher John Keating (Robin Williams) brings his unconventional methods to stuffy Welton Academy. When you’ll start crying: After his father demands he withdraw from the school play and enter military school, troubled Neil (Robert Sean Leonard) commits suicide. When you’ll totally lose it: Keating is fired, but his students stage a final protest at the risk of expulsion, standing on their desks and calling out, “O captain! My captain!” as Keating leaves. 2. The Green Mile What it’s about: Death row inmate John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan) reveals to prison guard Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) that he has healing powers and has been falsely accused. When you’ll start crying: John shows Paul what really happened to the two young girls he was accused of killing. When Paul offers to set him free, John says that he is tired of all the pain in the world and ready to be free of it. When you’ll totally lose it: John is sent to the electric chair to be executed, but he refuses the black hood because he is afraid of the dark. He is killed as Paul looks on. 1. Field of Dreams Baseball, fathers, sons, nostalgia, ghostly reunions, and a general air of wholesome middle-American romanticism: Field of Dreams is still the ultimate male weepie. When Kevin Costner’s corn farmer finally gets to play catch with his dad, the only people who can resist the moment’s waterworks-courting power are those who don’t like sports. Or dads. Or feelings. It is important for men to connect with their feelings and be able to express them. Crying is not a weakness. When men are able to express sadness it is a strength and is good for you.
